The Laboratory at Northern Regional Hospital is staffed 24 hours a day and provides a full range of services to meet the needs of the people in Surry and surrounding counties.
Approximately 350,000 tests are performed annually.

COVID-19 Test Site
Northern Regional Hospital COVID-19 tests are now available at our outreach laboratory located at 810 Worth Street, across from the hospital’s emergency department. Currently, the collection site is open for walk-ins from 7:00am until 3:00pm, Monday – Friday. The site is for the collection of specimens only and is not a clinic to be evaluated by a physician. Patients may come for a COVID-19 test, with or without symptoms. This test is not an antibody test, nor is it a rapid (45-minute) test. The return of test results is averaging 3-5 days. In addition to walk-ins, Northern is utilizing the outreach location to test pre-surgical patients and those sent from other area medical clinics who may be out of test kits. Insurance is accepted and there are options available for those without insurance. We do ask for anyone with symptoms of COVID-19 to call the number on the door when you arrive and someone will instruct you on entering the office. The Northern Outreach Laboratory is located at 810 Worth Street in Mount Airy, across the street from the Northern Regional Hospital Emergency Department. The office is next door to Affordable Wellness.

COVID Test Site Frequently Asked Questions:
How and when will I get results?
COVID-19 lab tests are sent to LabCorp, which may return results within 3-5 days. You will receive a phone call only if your test results are positive. Please do not call our centers for test results, as results will be communicated to you as soon as they are completed via MyNorthernChart (Patient Portal).
You may access your results online two different ways:
- Accessing the Northern Regional Patient Portal at mynorthernchart.com website using the email address you provided at check in. If you have issues logging into your Patient Portal, please call (336) 719-7300, and/or
- Create an account for the LabCorp Patient Portal at patient.labcorp.com. LabCorp will send you an email when your test results are completed at which point you can login to review.
What type of test is performed?
NRH performs a PCR test, which tests for active infections only. We do not administer antibody tests, which indicate whether the patient has been infected in the past.
How is my sample for testing collected?
We collect nasal secretions by inserting the swab into your nostril approximately 1 inch into the nasal passage (midway) with the most visible drainage or the nostril that is most congested if drainage is not present. The swab is rotated several times, removed gently and this process is repeated on the other side.
Is there an out-of-pocket cost?
Patients should not have any out-of-pocket costs. If you have health insurance, you must bring your card with you to the test site. If you do not have insurance, we will ask you for your state ID to submit the cost of your test to the federal program for the uninsured.
